New Koha Image

posted Aug 1, 2015, 5:54 PM by Josh Hertel

The Koha image I created a few years ago continues to be popular. It is by far the biggest landing page on the site and every month one or two people send me a note saying that they are using it to try Koha on a Windows, Mac, or Linux system. I've heard from Buddhist monks, librarians in Europe, and teachers at different schools around the world. Consequently, I felt like it was time to update the image.

The latest image now uses Debian Jessie and is running Koha 3.20. You can visit the install guide here:

New Page - Math Ed Grad Degrees

posted Aug 26, 2014, 8:48 AM by Josh Hertel

I created a new page where I intend to post information about graduate degrees in mathematics education. I have been trying to do my own small part in helping the field attract more great candidates. If you are interested in a graduate degree in mathematics education and would like to learn more, please feel free to contact me.

Updates to Materials for Researchers

posted Jul 29, 2014, 1:41 PM by Josh Hertel   [ updated Jul 29, 2014, 1:55 PM ]

I removed the page titled Materials for Researchers and instead created tabs linking the PME/PME-NA Proceedings and New Math Materials spreadsheets. These spreadsheets have also been embedded in the webpage rather than requiring the user to navigate to google docs.

Koha Updates

posted Jun 14, 2014, 7:49 PM by Josh Hertel

I've had to move the koha images to google drive (I was using UbuntuOne but it has been discontinued). I also created another image. The first image contains a fully installed library server using MARC21. The second contains a library server that still needs to be setup and can be used to create a server using UNIMARC.

I continue to hear from different users who have found the image to be helpful. If you try it out or have a question, please let me know.

How-To Screencast for Koha

posted Mar 5, 2014, 4:32 PM by Josh Hertel   [ updated Mar 5, 2014, 4:33 PM ]

I created a short how-to screencast that explains the setup of the pre-made Koha image. I'm hopeful that this will help more people figure out how to use the image.

Koha Image Updated to 3.14

posted Jan 12, 2014, 4:15 PM by Josh Hertel

I have updated the Koha image to version 3.14.

I am also in the process of setting up a second image that will allow users more options in setting up the koha image. Specifically, it will allow users to walk through part of the install process themselves. I have recently discovered that it is not possible to switch from MARC21 to UNIMARC after the system has been installed. Thus, the second image make it possible for users to select UNIMARC rather than MARC21. Users will also be able to personalize other features of the system including the language.

New Section: Minecraft

posted Dec 1, 2013, 8:15 PM by Josh Hertel

I have created a new section called Minecraft. I intend to use this section to discuss my own experience with the game as a player and server administrator. Additionally, I hope to discuss what I see as the potential for using Minecraft in teaching mathematics. Check it out and feel free to leave a comment if you are interested. http://joshhertel.com/minecraft

Update 6/14/13

posted Jun 14, 2013, 12:01 PM by Josh Hertel   [ updated Jun 14, 2013, 12:43 PM ]

I'm updating the front page to more of a blog style. I've continued to update the site with new things and I'll be adding a few more how-to posts (or videos) over the summer.

Currently, my how-to for Koha has been steadily drawing in more traffic. Speaking of which, if you happen to use Koha image, please send me a note! I've created a google circle for sending out updates to users.
